10 Things I Love About Crochet

10 Things I Love About Crochet

I was working in the car waiting for Ben the other day and my mind was wandering. I was thinking about all the things I love about crochet. Then it struck me that I should share some of those reasons with you. So I’ve put together a list of my top ten favourite things.

My Top Ten

1. Working on a cozy afghan or blanket on a cold rainy day.

There is nothing better than working on a big afghan or blanket when it’s raining or even better snowing outside. It’s like the working equivalent of a duvet day. Living in Scotland, we have more than our fair share of gloomy days.

2. The texture of beautiful yarn

Working with beautiful yarn is a treat for your hands. The wool slips easily through your fingers and hook and the project is practically guaranteed to look spectacular. There is no down side to working with great yarn.

3. Starting a new project

The excitement of starting a new project can’t be overstated. There is a rush of nervous energy, especially if the project is something I’ve never tried before.

4. The rhythm of the stitches

That sounds a bit zen I know, but sliding into a rhythm while working becomes a bit like meditating. I often lose my sense of time while I’m working. A friend compared it to some of her mindfulness techniques of just being in the moment. I don’t know about that, but it is very relaxing.

5. The amazing variety

There is no end to the variety of things you can make in crochet. I can be working on an amigurumi lion one day and a massive blanket the next. There is no such thing as being stuck in a crochet rut.

6. Yarn shopping

If any of you know me personally, you know how much I loath shopping. Yarn shopping is a whole different ball game (see what I did there…ball..yarn!) I’d call it a guilty pleasure but I refuse to feel guilty about it. Searching for the perfect yarn for a project is a highlight of any day.

7. Pattern surfing

I love when someone comes to me with only a vague idea of what they’re looking for. It means I can pattern surf and give them plenty of ideas to choose from. I get to indulge myself and make sure they get exactly what they want. Win, win!

8. Its 100% portable

Crochet is the ultimate, transportable job. It is rare to see me without my crochet. In waiting rooms, coffee shops, on long car journeys (when I’m not driving of course), you’ll find me and my yarn drum. I’ll crochet anywhere. Bonus- you don’t need to sit next to an electric outlet because you never run out of charge!

9. No Shortcuts

You can’t cut corners with crochet. There are not shortcuts or quick fixes. No machines, no cut and paste, you need to put the work in. It’s a pride thing with me. Knowing I’ve touched every millimeter of yarn on a project is something unique and special.

10. There is always something new to learn

Crochet is an ever evolving craft. That means there will always be something new for me to learn. A new technique, a new stitch, a new trend. Crochet is the gift that keeps on giving.

Narrowing it down

That completes my top ten. It took me quite a while to narrow down my list which just kept growing the minute I put pen to paper but I had to be ruthless and keep it to my top ten things. Watch out for a post with all my pet hates coming soon.

Until next time,

Be productive, be brilliant, be kind
